Ways of Reading Kerouac: A Talk by Brad Hawley

  • 10 Jun 2010
  • 7:30 PM
  • The Kerouac House, 1418 Clouser Orlando, FL 32804
If you have ever read On the Road (or plan to) and are curious about what makes Jack Kerouac one of America’s great writers then please join us next Thursday night.  Brad Hawley will be talking to us about the three ways that Kerouac is often read: biographically, culturally/historically, and textually.  Brad will be focusing on a “textual” reading based on Tim Hunt's book, Kerouac's Crooked Road, the first work of criticism that took seriously the formal elements of Kerouac’s novels.  Brad comments, “Hunt's reading of On the Road is what made me finally respect Kerouac not just for striving for greatness as an artist, but for achieving it as well.”

Brad will take us on a journey through his own reading of Kerouac through the years.  From a High School obsessed Kerouac fan and leader of the Kerouac inspired “Sunlight Appreciation Club,” which consisted of five silent minutes together after lunch period, to his readings of Kerouac post PhD in Literature.  This promises to be a lively evening.

Please RSVP!
This will be an intimate event at The Kerouac House, with refreshments and conversation to follow. Space is limited, so please RSVP to summerrodman@gmail.com.

Also please bring optional snacks and wine/beverages for post refreshments.
