Each year, the College Park Neighborhood Association plans a wonderful tour of historic homes in the neighborhood. The 2008 tour, which takes place on November 16 from 12:30 until 5 p.m., will feature a dozen small historic homes—all with details that are unique to their heritage. Tour-goers will enjoy some of the things that made those smaller homes more livable, like built-in furniture and a high level of craftsmanship.
In addition to the homes that are featured within the theme, the College Park house that Jack Kerouac lived in during his rise to fame will be open to tour participants.
As a special treat this year, Judy Copeland, who is the writer living in the house this fall, will hold readings at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Judy is a California attorney who left the law to backpack around Oceania, Asia, and Africa, staying with families she met along the way. Her travel stories have appeared in the Florida Review, Literal Latte, Water~Stone Review, New Millennium Writings, and Travelers’ Tales anthologies. The Central Florida Plein Air Artists will also join us on our tour this year and will paint the homes featured on the tour. The Central Florida Plein Air Artists are dedicated to preserving and recording, through their paintings, Florida's disappearing natural environments, as well as Florida architecture and historic landmarks and sites. The artists' paintings will be available for sale at the Tour Headquarters. For information their artwork, go to www.pleinairflorida.org.Tour Headquarters is at the College Park Community Center, and check in is between 12:30 and 4:00 p.m. where you will be given your tour ticket/brochure. The College Park Community Center is located behind Princeton Elementary at 2393 Elizabeth Avenue. The Historic Homes Tour is free for CPNA members. Membership forms will be available at check-in for College Park residents. For non-members, the admission is $15 per person and $10 for seniors.Information about the houses will be included in your ticket/brochures and through volunteers at each home. Refreshments will be provided at some stops. A portion of the proceeds from this year's tour will be used to fund the Michael Welborn Education Grant. The grant will be awarded to a College Park school for a history-related activity.
