Orlando Babe Ruth

Home Run Derby Rules

The Home Run Derby (HRD) is a fundraiser for the Orlando Babe Ruth (OBR) league. All profits will go directly to the OBR league to be used for general expenses.

  • 1.            The event will be for all ages.
  • 2.            $20 entry fee. All participants must be signed in and paid in full before participating. No buy-ins are allowed.
  • 3.            Prizes will be awarded as follows:

1st Place - $100 cash. Trophy. Free Fall 2016 Orlando Babe Ruth registration voucher.

2nd Place - $25 cash. 50% off Fall 2016 Orlando Babe Ruth registration voucher.

3rd Place - 50% Fall 2016 Orlando Babe Ruth registration voucher.

  • 4.            Fence distance will be 200 feet for ages 12 and over, 125 feet for ages 9 to 11 and 55+, and 75 feet for ages 8 and under. Cones in the outfield (or field spray) will be used to denote the home run fence for all non-200 foot distances.
  • 5.            The batters age will be the actual age at the time of the event.
  • 6.            Bats may not exceed 34" in length, and the bat barrel may not exceed 2 5/8" (big barrel bats are allowed) in diameter.  All aluminum/alloy barrel bats and all composite handle (only) aluminum/alloy barrels are allowed.  Only composite barrel bats certified and marked BBCOR .50 will be allowed.  Wood bats are allowed.
  • 7.            A pitching machine (Jugs) will be used and will be set to 50mph. The machine always throws strikes.
  • 8.            All batters will get 10 pitches per round. If a home run is hit on the final ball, the batter can keep hitting until an out is made (a non-home run).
  • 9.            No time outs are allowed during an at-bat. Once the previous ball hits the ground the next ball will be loaded and pitched. Time outs will only be allowed in the case of an injury of malfunction of the pitching machine or related equipment.
  • 10.       Round one (1) will allow each batter one at bat. The number of home runs hit during the first round will be used to seed all players. 50% of the players (the top half) will continue to round 2 – rounding to the high side to achieve an even number of players for Round 2.
  • 11.       Round 2 and beyond will be head-to-head format, single elimination. Matchups will be based on seeding (Ex. 18 players advance to round 2, #1 plays #18, #2 plays #17, #3 plays #16, etc.).
  • 12.       Ties will always be decided by a 5 pitch playoff (continuous pitches if home run hit on last ball). If no home runs are hit, the furthest ball hit will decide the winner. The playoff will continue until there is a winner.
  • 13.       Each batter gets to see one “free” pitch at the beginning of every at bat. The first pitch is always a “free” pitch no matter what the result is.
  • 14.       A home run will count as 1 point/run.
  • 15.       An official scorekeeper and pitcher/machine operator will be provided.
  • 16.       All batters age 12 and under must wear a helmet while batting.
  • 17.       Baseball cleats are allowed.
  • 18.       Bring a glove as shagging fly balls is encouraged.
